Theft Attempt on The Big White Horse

The message: “Don’t steal this truck!”

Last week was a bad week: someone tried to steal our truck, a 2000 Ford F-350 dually crew cab. Freshly waxed! This really surprised us for two reasons:

  • No one ever broke into our vehicle before, and
  • The truck was parked 20′ from a bright street light, 100′ from the front door of Barnes & Noble, and it was 7 PM!

They damaged the driver’s door lock and gained entry. Then they tried to rotate the ignition switch, probably with the big screwdriver or whatever they used on the door lock. About half of the ignition switch was in pieces on the floor. My key would not activate the ignition.

What Did You Do?

I hailed the mall security guy who was cruising the area, then called the police.

Then emailed Gary Goetsch to phone me! I didn’t have his phone number so I couldn’t call him. That worked and he retrieved us. Thank You, Gary! (It’s always good to have friends!)

I contacted my insurance company. They sent a tow truck, as the police highly recommended that we not leave it there overnight. He practically guaranteed a successful theft attempt if left there!

The next day, I researched repair places, selected one, and had the truck delivered to their shop in Mission. The next day, it was repaired.

Alarm System

Then I started researching alarm systems for vehicles! I visited four alarm installers and did research on the internet.  I selected a system (K-9) based largely on the installer and his recommendation.

The Big White Horse is now sporting an alarm system which should discourage theft attempt 100%.

This event cost me about $450 plus at least one day of making phone calls, etc. And all of this after the horse was out of the barn, so to speak. At least I still had a truck in which to install the alarm.

Now the gate is closed. I hope forever!
