Memorial Day Program

Lime Springs has always observed Memorial Day. At least they have for the last 70+ years, which spans my memory. At least into the 50s, the program was held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, east of town. The “stage” was the north-facing porch of the gardener’s building. The audience sat on the surrounding lawn or sat on chairs which were quite possibly provided by the Larson Funeral Home.

There was always a guest speaker. The only one I remember was Earl Sekora. I remember bits of a story he told of concentration camps. It wasn’t a story with a happy ending for most of the people involved.

The Gettysburg Address was always recited by a local high school student. I seem to recall Bill Davis and Wayne Roberts as two who performed that service.

The Lime Springs High School Band was always on tap. I believe they originally marched from the school to the cemetery. Later, Andy Jensen’s truck was converted from a cattle transporter to a HS band transporter with a good swishing-off with a garden hose. It was an honest attempt to clean it up!

The American Legion, lead by Jim Thomas, honored veterans at Pleasant Hill Cemetery with a reading, three-gun salute, and taps.
