A Birthday

By Nancy Moldt Sugges / 14 years ago

Do you just really love your birthday and as the date gets close begin to count the days?  That is me and how I’ve long felt about my birthday.  It never mattered if anyone else even knew it was my birthday although a host of wonderful folks did know and remember, it was MY DAY and nothing could make it a bad day for me.

I’ve spent birthdays backpacking with a reflector oven baking the cake in the Olympic National Park.  I’ve had surprise parties that surprised the heck out of me.  I’ve eaten at some pretty fancy places with some pretty fancy prices.  I’ve had just family for a simple dinner.

This year, now looking from the other side of 70 – good grief, 70!! – I will truly take on a new perspective for each new day.  The good news is I wake up to enjoy them.

I have really taken to fly fishing.  I wish I had started much earlier in my life but I didn’t.  So for my birthday I got the finest fly rod the fly shop had to offer.  If I don’t catch some dandies we will not be able to blame it on the rod.  I am learning quite a lot of new lingo; i.e., leaders, tippets, wooly buggers, hatch.

What I think it all means is we are never too old to learn.  And if you are on the other side of 70, don’t fret for one minute because from this side – life is just heating up.  I like to think of it as a 7 day weekend.
