Surviving the Common Cold

The Common Cold Season is Here

This week, I had a persisting cold.  With a headache, fatigue, stuffy nose, sore throat, and occasional watery eyes, I had all the symptoms.  Worse yet, a common cold is not enough to keep a person home from school, and I suffered through days of torture by oxygen deprivation.

Actually, that may be a slight exaggeration, but going to school with a cold was no picnic, either.  I sounded like I was wearing an invisible nose plug all day from the congestion, and my lips were horribly chapped.  At night, I tossed and turned for what felt like hours, trying to find a position from which I could breathe.  It felt like it would never end.

For me, it was essential to wear comfortable clothes, and generally feel comfortable while I had the cold.  I didn’t want to bother with makeup or matching socks when I was already occupied with difficult task of breathing (not that I bother with matching socks anyway).  Another huge helper in getting over my cold was sleep.  I carried chapstick around to help with the chapped lips, and drank tons of water.

Be Patient with the Common Cold

However, the most valuable thing to have when you come down with the common cold is patience.  Don’t get frustrated, and try to stay positive.  You have to remember that your cold will only last for a few days, and getting upset won’t help anything.  If anything, it’ll only make thing worse.

You Can Survive a Cold

Colds are horrible, but they are survivable.  Just remember to drink water, sleep well, carry chapstick, and most of all, keep patience.  And, look on the bright side.  When the cold is gone, you definitely appreciate the ability to breathe a little bit more.  See you next week!
