Make It Fun

Not everything in life is going to be fun.  This is an unfortunate aspect of life.  Although there will always be these moments, we don’t have to let this be the case all the time. There are ways to make the uneventful more fun, and the boring more entertaining.

One thing that I don’t quite enjoy all the time is homework.  Not only do I spend six hours working in school, but then I take school home with me and work for another hour there.  I understand the necessity of homework, what with there not being enough time for teachers to get through their curriculum, and kids forgetting the material, but that doesn’t make it any less painful to sit down at the table, my books and papers spread across the table.

One way I try to improve the experience for myself is to set up my computer in front of me.  I make sure to eliminate any tabs with distractions open, such as YouTube or Netflix. Especially Netflix. Then, I pull up my Spotify app, and start playing my music. I find that as long as I’m not doing any writing, music helps me stay focused on what I’m doing, and makes the whole experience more enjoyable.

There are other ways to have fun while doing homework as well.  I asked one of my close friends what she does to have fun while doing homework, and she said that she likes to eat snacks while she does homework. When she finishes a problem or finds an answer, she eats a bite or a part of her snack.  According to her, Goldfish make a good reward food.

And it isn’t just homework that can be made more amusing.  I have found that the best way to enjoy something is simply to decide to enjoy it.  Instead of merely waiting until I can do something else, I try to throw myself completely into whatever I’m doing.

P.E. isn’t my favorite subject in school. Many of the things that we learn are fun, but I’m not very physical. I don’t enjoy exercise or sports like some people do, and I would rather be reading or writing than working out in our school’s weight room. However, when I really try to win and be competitive, it’s a lot more fun and I end up getting more of a work out.

When I came to this conclusion, I recalled a saying that my mother once told me. She said, “Do what you love, but also love what you do.” I realized that you can spend your entire life trying to avoid things that you don’t want to do, only having fun when you finally get to do the things you enjoy, or you can choose to enjoy whatever you get a chance to do. Whether that’s homework, P.E., or chores, there are ways that you can turn a tedious task into a chance to have some fun.

Not everything in life is going to be entertaining.  In fact, there are plenty of things that, if you let them, can feel boring and mundane. Don’t let these things just be tasks that you accomplish, and then forget about. Try to incorporate some line of fun into your day, even if it’s only while you are doing your homework or playing in P.E. Remember, do what you love, but also love what you do. See you next week!
