Busy Week Started with “Oshkosh”

It’s a busy week for Iowans!

  • This was RAGBRAI week.
  • This was AirVenture week. (That’s the big “airshow” in Oshkosh.)
  • This weekend is Nordic Fest in Decorah.
  • This weekend is the Backbone Bluegrass Festival, near Strawberry point.
  • Probably many others of which I am not aware.

Tuesday, a friend and I drove to Oshkosh to “see the airplanes.” With only one day there, we didn’t have time to see anywhere near all there was to see. We missed any exciting new designs, of which there surely were several. We took full advantage of the buses and trams, but still got tired by mid-afternoon.

The picture above is a group of homebuilt airplanes flying in a well-organized formation. These are type “RV” and are now the most popular homebuilt design. Over 6,000 are flying!

Music Today!

We used the bluegrass festival to entice Harlene (my sister, who lives in Mankato) to come visit us. We both enjoy the music and the setting. We’re thrilled this year that Goldwing Express will be performing. We’ve seen them a few times in Texas and they are good! They’re the best entertainers we’ve seen down there. Besides that, they are excellent musicians.

The other great group we enjoyed  in Texas is CrossStrung, who performed at last year’s Sweet Corn Days. They are the best musicians we’ve seen there and also are very good entertainers.

Events We’re Skipping

I have never had the urge to ride a bike 400+ miles with 10,000+ of my closest friends, so RAGBRAI is not even a consideration for us.

My heritage should draw me to Nordic Fest. However, one can’t do everything so something has to give.

If you’re an Iowan and are bored this week, you might not have looked far enough. Or maybe you just want to be bored!
