Happenings in Mission

Here are a few of the happenings in Mission. It doesn’t take much to keep us busy, but these are a few of the things we’ve done or observed recently.

Farming

Last week, the corn fields about two miles from us were combined. Yes, they have corn here. No, it doesn’t look like corn in Iowa! The local corn is only about chest high. I have no idea what the yield is.

But it is combined with a big green combine, so familiar anyplace grains are grown. As we travel about the country, we are amazed at the market share John Deere has! They are everywhere!

Entertainment

Each Monday night, we have Branson-style entertainment at our park. Last night it really was from Branson! We watched Gordy and Debbie. They’ve performed in Branson for the last eight years. Currently, their show is a dinner show at the Uptown Cafe, just off the strip on the way to the Lawrence Welk theater.

Gordy is from Cedar Rapids!! He lived a few blocks east of us, right off 42nd St. NE. Debbie is from Kimball, SD. That’s just before you get to Chamberlain as you’re headed out to Sturgis or the Black Hills.

They put on a great show! He is a very good singer!

Did you know that Doug Gabriel, another Branson performer, is from Marion, which is right next door to Cedar Rapids?

It’s good to see two local boys “making it big” in show biz at Branson!

Culture

Sunday, we attended a chamber concert in Mission. Rather different for us, but OK. Neither Pat nor I really cared for the music, but we did find it interesting to see the instruments played up close.

The ensemble included a recorder, harpsichord, three violins, cello, and bass.

We caught no mistakes. And the goodies were delicious!

Visitors

We have no visitors coming this winter—at least none of which we are aware. We’re concerned, however, that if the weather “up north” continues as it is, we might be inundated with guests!

Gary and Mary Goetsch, on the other hand, enjoyed a visit from their son, Ted, this past week. He was escaping from Hudson, WI, and got in several rounds of golf, played in shorts. He even managed to get a bit of a sunburn so he would have a souvenir to show the freezing locals back in WI.
