Fuel Price Low

Fuel Price

The big news today is that I filled The Big White Horse for $1.809/gallon! That’s the lowest fuel price in over ten years. It almost makes me want to jump in the truck and drive, drive, drive!

On the tank of fuel just refilled, I averaged 14.1 mpg for the 534 miles that tank took me. I put 38 gallons into my 38 gallon tank! I think it was close to EMPTY! A “magic meter” I have said there was 1.6 gallons left in the tank—but what does it know?

I love it when the fuel price is low!

Internet

I’ve bored some of you with my Internet problems. I’m pleased to report that I’ve now had service for three days with NO outages, certainly a new record for this year. I hope it keep up until the end of March!

At least in theory, this means that I can spend more time posting things on The Lime Springs Page and less time fighting the Internet company or struggling along with alternative and super-inconvenient Internet connections.

Local Politics

About six weeks ago, all 12 or so employees of a tax assessors office (equivalent to our county treasurer, I think) were arrested for fraud. It seems they forgot to deposit several thousands of dollars of the money people paid as taxes.

During the investigation, they found a report from four or five years ago which mentioned the irregularities. Nothing was done about it!

It’s hard to imagine that every employee in the office, from the top dog on down, was arrested for being a crook!

They appointed a lady a couple of weeks ago to take over as the manager, but they couldn’t open the office until a week or so ago because they had to wait for her to get bonded. They did open a few days ago.

Today she resigned!!

Meanwhile yesterday or today, they arrested people in Brownsville’s county from the same type of office for what sounds like the same type of thing!

And a year ago, people went to jail for trying to fix a school board election!

Ties to Mexico are close down here. People relate to Mexico much more than they relate to other parts of the US. After all, Mexico is only a few hundred feet across a river while the rest of the US is two hundred miles across desolate land.

I suspect these transgressions I mentioned are simply a carryover of doing things the way they are done in Mexico. If so, Mexico would seem to be corrupt from the bottom to the top.

That’s too bad. The Mexicans and the Hispanics who are Americans are hard working and ambitious. I’ve met several very interesting locals of Mexican descent. It’s unfortunate indeed that their country can not be run in a more lawful way. They’re missing a lot because of it.
