After only eight years, Cedar Rapids is hit with another significant flood.

Pat and I are safe; our location is in no danger of any flooding. That’s the good news, for which we are very thankful.

All of the eight bridges across the Cedar River are closed except the I-380 bridge. You can imagine the traffic across that bridge these days!

This morning, the river level is 19 feet and rising. It’s predicted to crest Tuesday morning at 23 feet. That’s the second highest level ever! More good news: that’s about 8 feet lower than it was in 2008!

The city has spent the last four days preparing for this event. As a result, there will be much less damage than there was last time. Also, they bought about 1,000 homes after the last flood and demolished them so that’s a thousand fewer homes to be flooded.

Two churches have been made available as shelters for those who evacuated their homes.

Schools are closed through Wednesday. Bridges are expected to be open by the end of the work week.
