Border Activities along the Texas/Mexico Border: 1

This map shows the area where just about everyone who goes to “The Rio Grand Valley” lives during the winter. Our spot (“Home”) is at the extreme western edge of the Winter Texan area. There are lots of border activities in the area which you might find interesting.

We are only three miles from Mexico. At the moment, there is a balloon “blimp” flying a few hundred feet above the ground about three miles from us. The purpose, of course, is to observe activities along the border using the sophisticated electronic sensors onboard.

Border activities in this area of Texas are not always pleasant.

The local TV news reported the following weekend activities along the border:

  • A 23-year-old was caught carrying $260,000 dollars into Mexico without reporting it. I suspect his future is somewhat limited!
  • Seven people were caught trying to enter the U.S. at Pharr, not far from us, by hiding in the bed of a pickup. The were hidden, they thought, by a tonneau cover. A border dog sniffed right through that!
  • Seven packages of pot, worth about half-a-million dollars, were brought across the river on the backs of swimmers.
  • A McAllen police officer was shot this morning. No details on that, other than that it was in the southern part of McAllen.

Clearly this isn’t “the news from Lake Woebegone” but it is today’s news of border activities.
