Special People

By kaw / 13 years ago

This past Friday, Feb. 1, special people gathered at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church for a memorial service for Bill Davis. Like many of us, Bill had been absent from Lime Springs for about 50 years but he was still a classmate, friend, or acquaintance of many in the area.

They felt it fitting that a memorial service be held, so they made it happen! Lime Springers are known for getting the job done, especially when it comes to helping neighbors or the community in general. Our town has lots of ready, willing, and able volunteers! Lime Springs has lots of special people!

The Service

In this case, the primary players were Donna, Karee, and Gary. As I am over a thousand miles away, I wasn’t at the service so I’ll rely on Donna’s words to describe it:

Bill’s service is over and it was a loving farewell; Gary’s remarks were wonderful; Gary is a true orator.  We both used lots of poetry–High Flight, Invictus, 23rd Psalm in the old Scottish paraphrase; scripture from 12th chapter of Ecclesiastes; sang “Stepping In The Light” with memories of kiddies of long ago marching around the LSUMC basement with Ella May Davis pumping the old organ and teaching us right & wrong along with left and right.

We also sang “God Be With You Til We Meet Again,” and I am sure everyone there hoped someday to hear Bill’s great voice raised again in song with a heavenly choir.

There were 6 of the 20 who are left from the Class of ’57 there–and with the dreadfully cold weather and our age and various infirmities, that is great.

For those who weren’t there: service conducted by Donna Ihns, Kareen Bowers Johnson played, Gary Thomas gave the eulogy, Bernard Roesler gave the military benediction, and Jim Miller was the usher.

It was special to have Bill’s coach and teacher LaVern Greenfield and Carol there; well, every one that was there was special.

It sounds like it was a delightful service and one fitting for a son of Lime Springs.

Thank You to these special people who made this happen.
