Tangerine Report from Mission

A Prolific Tangerine Tree Behind Us

I’ve reported on the weather and the problems down here along the Mexican border. This is a bit different: a tangerine report.

As you can see, there’s an excellent crop this year. Some say tangerines produce on a two-year cycle. It might be true, as two years ago there were many on this tree and last year, very few. But this year, WOW!

The tangerines this year are also much larger than normal. That might be because there has been much more rain than normal here during the growing season.

The Tangerines are Huge!

The abundance of rain seems to have had another effect: the fruit is very large and very juicy, but not as tasty as one would expect. In fact, the taste is as if it had been “watered down.” And that may be exactly what has happened.

It’s a real treat to just go outside and pick an orange or tangerine for a quick treat! That’s one thing we can’t do back in Iowa.

And yes, we do have permission from the owners to pick their fruit. In fact Larry, the owner of the tangerine tree, got after us for not eating enough tangerines.

I’m now trying to do a better job of having a tangerine every day. Certainly there are enough!

And that’s the tangerine report for January 10, 2015.
