A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

That great weekend in Lime Springs—Sweet Corn Days—passed over two weeks ago. And I still haven’t written up all the articles that have been rattled around in my mind.

To speed the process, I’m just going to rely on the quote above: A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words. I’ll post the pictures with very few words. You’ll know who they are!

Few words; lots of pictures. Here we go!

Lime Springs Beef

Let’s start with Lime Springs Beef, as you’ll see their new plant as you enter town from US-63. Tours of the plant were given by Brad Lodge, designer of the plant. It’s good to hear the story from the fellow who really does know what he’s talking about.

In case you have forgotten or hadn’t heard Brad’s story, I’ll give a short version.

Several months ago (February?) Brad died at the construction site. Yes, he was gone. He was saved by the use of a portable defibrillator from the local fire department, plus several zaps from a similar device in the ambulance on the way to Rochester.

One week and a pacemaker later, Brad was back on the job! This is indeed a success story! The odds of him surviving the heart failure were extremely low, but thanks to the local volunteer firemen and their special equipment, Brad survived in great shape!

But this is supposed to be pictures, not words. But Brad’s is such a great story that I couldn’t resist.

Here’s Brad, along with Jesse Stevens whose vision is coming to fruition in Lime Springs Beef.

Talent Contest

A talent contest was held Friday evening as a kick-off event for Sweet Corn Days. There were two classes based on age and at least half-a-dozen contestants vying for the $100 first prize in each class. That’s pretty good prize money for a few minutes of performing! Even if one practiced two hours, that’s still 50-bucks per hour; not bad earnings!

In fact, the prize was so good that I know one person who is definitely in the over-17-years-of-age category who will seriously consider entering next year! If you have any talent or performance capability at all, I encourage you to give it a try! This years contestants were very acceptable; not one was “bad.” There was a fair amount of audience interest, as you can see by the attentive crowd in the photo. You can probably pick out some friends in the photo!

I believe the talent contest could grow into a very popular event at our Sweet Corn Days. And of course that would make it possible to have more Sweet Corn Days Pictures!

Sheryl (Moldt) Sloan, my LSHS ’55 classmate, was one of the judges this year. (pink/red blouse) She has music running through her veins so Curt Tienter made a good choice by selecting her.

LSHS Class of 1955

Well, one-fourth of the class gathered at Smith’s RV Resort! Sloan’s and Williams’s camped there. Gary Thomas drove over from his home in New Albin just to visit for a short while.

And just to make sure my flying skills could be upgraded, he brought me a 1940s pamphlet titled “How to Fly a Piper Cub” by the original Piper Aircraft Company. Thanks, Gary!
