Catching Up With the Mensink Family

One of the oldest men in town joined us recently!

Tuesday, on the way to Tootie’s funeral in Spring Valley, we stopped at KCDs to have lunch. Kenny Mensink came in, bringing a favorite treat he’d made for his daughter, Vicki, proprietor of the establishment. The treat: angel food cake with strawberries.

Decades ago, Kenny and Evelyn were our country neighbors. They lived just west of the Forest City #1 country school, where Ken Okada lives now.

Kenny joined us so we got caught up on his family. He has three children in the restaurant business: Vicki in Lime Springs, Darla in Wykoff, and Allen in Kendallville. He was proud to add that they were all successful!

Son Larry has just retired, for the third time!, from a phone company. He has lived in St. Ansgar for years.

News of his wife, Evelyn, is not so good: she is being cared for in Hastings, MN.

Of my father, Harlan, Kenny said, “I sure miss your dad! We had a lot of fun!”

Oldest Men in Lime Springs

Photo of Kenneth Jones, one of the oldest men in Lime SpringsKenny said that he was the second oldest man in town, at age 92! The oldest: Kenneth Jones, “forever” friend and next-door neighbor to my parents when they lived in town.

Both of these men are doing pretty well, but as Kenny said, “We’re getting older.”

This picture shows Kenneth Jones, his granddaughter, and his daughter as the town celebrated his 90th birthday in 2009.
