And so it is time to reveal the identity of those pictured in the Mystery Photo Contest, first published here on The Lime Springs Page one week ago!

It got a few people scratching their heads, others fetching Anna May/Jane’s Blue Book from its storage spot in the garage …and those are just the ones I’ve heard from!

They say that, like physical exercise for the body, it is good to exercise the brain a bit, too. Hope this little contest, which really wasn’t a contest because there is no prize, contributed to your health in some small way.

Responses from Lime Springers

The first response was from none other than my sister, Holly Frohling, who lives in Mankato. Her response:
“Is it Charlotte Fries, her son, and his daughter? When I first looked at the picture, I thought of her or Verna McCaustland.  Since no one was guessing, I thought I would take a try.
Now why isn’t there a prize for this?”

Burton Nagle, Minneapolis area, offered this:
“Regarding your hint for identifying the lady in the middle of your posted picture, was the color green, like in money. I’m waiting for your next hint.”  …then later:
Is the mystery person, Kay Joan Jones Daly, daughter of Dr John R Jones and granddaughter of John Hughes Jones?”

San Antonian Wayne Roberts came through in his usual short and efficient manner:
“Other color: Red
Same first names: Lyman
LSHS grad, mid 50’s
Ergo: Charlotte Fries”

Hint 4 clearly helped Wayne!

And just today, Pamela Buresh, Minneapolis area, entered with this absolutely correct answer:
“Could this be Charlotte Fries and her children?”

The Rest of the Charlotte Friis Story

Charlotte Fries did indeed grow up in Lime Springs, graduated from LSHS in 1955 then went to Luther College.

Her father and grandfather, Lyman Fries Jr. and Sr., ran the International Harvester business at the west end of the main street. (International products—think Farmall tractors—are red!)

Char was married and lived in Hawaii. And as you can see, has two children, Andy and Cathy.

Now about the name! When they divorced, Char took the last name Friis, which is the Norwegian way of spelling Fries! Makes sense, right? (Did you know there are a lot of folks with Norwegian ancestry in the Seattle area, where she lives?)

Those are pretty much the hard facts related to the picture. Now my goal is to get her to help share some more of her life with us! It’s been an interesting one!

Entries Appreciated

Thanks to those who commented! It helps keep we Lime Springers in contact and, hopefully, provided a little fun.

I’ve a few more photos to publish which I think you’ll find interesting, too!
