Music in the Morning

By kaw / 11 years ago

An ecumenical church service, held in Brown Park, is an annual Sunday morning event as part of Sweet Corn Days. In spite of overcast and somewhat threatening weather, a fairly good crowd turned out.

The musicians decided early-on that setting up in the shelter was preferable to the flat-bed trailer which usually is the stage for the performers. Thankfully, the mist and light rain held off until nearly the end.

The guest musicians this year were The Johnson Strings, from New Hartford, Iowa. The consisted of the parents and six children, 3 boys and 3 girls, ages 10 through 20. All sang and each child played multiple instruments. And they played them well!

Here’s a little clip of parts of two selections they performed:

Paul has a “day job” at John Deere in Waterloo as a mechanical engineer. In addition to playing the string bass, which he only took up a short time ago, his message stressed the need for a change toward Christianity in our country.

I enjoyed watching Silas, the ten-year-old. It appeared that music came so naturally to him that he didn’t even have to think about it!

Sheryl Sloan, piano teacher and organist in Jefferson for years, gave her professional opinion that they were excellent musicians, handling key changes and keeping the tempo steady during each selection—even the somewhat difficult pieces which they performed.

You can learn more about them, including their performance schedule, at their website here: http://johnsonstrings.net/ If they are appearing near you, I highly recommend attending!

Thanks to the SWD committee for bringing such a talented family to Lime Springs!
