Knee High by the Fourth?

Sixty-five or so years ago, that was always the question. Will the corn be knee high by the Fourth of July?

Actually, it was more of a goal, I think. It usually made it, but once-in-awhile one had to hold the leaves upright during the measurement.

In the Cedar Rapids area, that standard of years past has been greatly exceeded this year. Not only is it taller than I am, but has tasseled and silked, too.

I suspect the farmers are looking forward to a bumper crop. But if we don’t get some rain, they won’t.
