Winter Texan’s Week in Mission, TX

By kaw / 13 years ago

This article will be a general catch-up article to let you know what Pat and I, fairly average Winter Texans, have been doing, since it is fairly obvious that I’ve not spent much time writing articles for the Lime Springs Page.

Just a couple hours ago, I looked up from the dinner table and saw a beautiful rainbow over  Lyle and Lila (Goetsch) Helm’s house. That called for a picture or ten.

The rainbows reminded me of their origin. After the flood, God said that he would never again destroy the world and almost all that was on it with a flood. He put the rainbow in place as sort of a “seal” to remind us.

Amy loved rainbows and in fact it was she who told me the above facts. She had learned it from one of her great friends, Karen or Cindy. On her grave marker there is a small rainbow, copied from a handiwork pillow she made, and a reference to the section of Genesis which reveals the origin rainbows.

But no reference to a pot of gold.

We had a “day out” today. First stop: the Peppermint Palace, the clubhouse at another park here in Mission. It’s a large steel-frame building covered with steel or aluminum. The sheets are alternating red and white in color, thus its name.

The event: the weekly polka jam! Today there were 13 squeeze boxes, a keyboard, a drummer, a banjo, a guitar, a valve trombone, three trumpets, and a tuba! He made the day a success!

Pat is full-blooded German. One of us likes polka music, especially polka music with a tuba!

Then off to our favorite browsing spots: Best Buy first because it was the first one we came to. There a lady employed by Samsung gave a great presentation on the features and benefits of the Samsung Galaxy tablet. Her knowledge was vast! I was sold —but did not buy. Today.

Then to lunch at Longhorn Steakhouse, our first visit to a restaurant of that chain. A pleasant experience, both at noon and for dinner tonight! And that was with just soup and a  half-sandwich. Oh yes, there was a huge chocolate dessert involved.

Next stop: Barnes & Noble. I browse the computer section and often get enthused about something new I notice to learn about. Now such enthusiasm today.

I did spot the just-released book Living With Honor. That’s the story of Sal Giunta, the soldier from nearby Hiawatha, who was awarded the Medal of Honor a couple of years ago. I browsed the first pages and learned that he truly was an unremarkable fellow from the Cedar Rapids area. Until that day in Afghanistan when he performed heroic deeds! He’s now out of the Army and lives in Colorado.

Last stop: Hobby Lobby. Pat has just begun taking a “Drawing with Watercolors” class. You wouldn’t believe all the “tools” and supplies it takes just to draw a picture! Anyway, I’m sure it will be worth the two trips to Hobby Lobby and at least one trip to Wal*Mart!

This is not a typical day at the park, lest you get the idea that every day is like this. They aren’t; today was special. And welcome! We’ve had about 4 days of overcast skies and light rain so were ready for an outing.

Monday this week, the park’s Branson-style entertainment began. We heard Goldwing Express and enjoyed them greatly. The dad and three adult sons were great entertainers and great musicians!

Pat spends a lot of time reading and simultaneously watching (?) TV. I spend my time working on websites. These days/weeks, I’ve spent hours and hours working on a new site for one of my AMSOIL dealers. It’s a nice site, but has been a real learning experience. And has had a few frustrating problems, but I’m confident they’ll soon be under control.

I’ll cover some more day-to-day activities in another article.
