Gary Goetsch, Lila Goetsch Helm, Keith Williams
From the Bonair Area
There are three of us here at Hidden Valley Ranch, Mission, TX, who grew up in the Bonair area: Gareth Goetsch and his sister Lila, and me.
Lila and her husband, Lyle Helm, live right across the street from us. Gary and Mary are about a block away. We see each other frequently—sometimes to eat, sometimes to share the Lime Springs Herald, and sometimes just to talk or listen.
Gary and I have a lot of things to talk about. One of our favorite subjects is Bud Weatherford. Bud was probably the catalyst which made Gary and I friends about 60 years ago, as we were both interested in ham radio.
Ham radio even trumped being sort-of relatives. Well, we do have common relatives, the Thomases (Wilt and Gary.) My great-great-uncle Uncle Tom (T.G. Thomas) was married to Gary and Lila’s great-aunt Aunt Mandy.
Besides Bud, common subjects are the Half-and-Half store in Bonair, Carl Nise (Gary’s uncle and everyone’s favorite mechanic,) and stories from our days in the USAF. Gary spent over five times as long in the service as I did, so he has waaaay more stories to tell than do I!
