Photo of Mabel Price HunnicutA daughter of Lime Springs died a couple of weeks ago: Mabel Price Hunnicut. Mabel, 89, was a daughter of long-time grocer Tom and Florence Price. She was married to, and later divorced from, Junior Jones, son of O. John Jones of the Standard station across from the locker.

We went to the memorial visitation Saturday evening and met her granddaughter Tabatha. I learned several interesting facts:

  • Mabel’s brother, Tudor, who was tragically killed in a train accident, was married! A daughter was born after his death.
  • She taught school for 43 years, much of it right here in or near Cedar Rapids. One of her principles here was Carl Carlson, college roommate of Don Collins.
  • Mabel had one child, Jeffrey Jones. He passed away this past January while barely past 50.
  • Mabel believed in and encouraged Tabatha, who is legally blind. Because of her grandmother’s encouragement, she’s leading a pretty normal life. Or at least as normal as possible with a husband and three darling children, 10, 7, and 1+!
