Lime Springs’ Bad News

This news isn’t current, as it happened a few months ago: the Lime Springs Herald is no more.

I was told by more than one Lime Springer that it was sorely missed.

Marcie does a good job at the Cresco Times Plain Dealer, but it is impossible for Lime Springs to get the breadth and depth of news in a paper which must target the entire county and area, rather than just the Lime Springs and Chester areas.

Could the Lime Springs Herald be “replaced” by a website? By this website, possibly? I believe the answers are “Yes” and “Yes” but to do so it will take active participation by at least one person, preferably more, in Lime Springs.

I live 120 miles from Lime Springs. I don’t have the social contacts nor the interest in being on top of everything that happens in my ol’ hometown. Besides that, I’m trying to divest myself of some activities. I think Pat and I should play more, so some things have to go!

City of Lime Springs Owns Domain Name

About ten years ago, the year RAGBRAI passed through town, I believe, I started an unofficial “official” website for Lime Springs, limesprings.com. The idea was that it would be useful to residents and outsiders who had questions about the town.

I’m pleased to report that ownership of the domain name has now been transferred to the City of Lime Springs! Rhonda, City Clerk, and Deb, Assistant City Clerk, have offered suggestions of things to add to the site to make it more useful to them and to residents. One suggestion: add the city ordinances to the site.

They will, eventually, do the updating of information and news on the site. We’ve already had one training session!

I’m working to convert the site to WordPress, which is the platform which runs this site. There is a bit of a learning curve, but it has tremendous capabilities and is easy to keep up to add new articles.

Empty Buildings

It pains me, and others, I’m sure, so see the empty buildings in Lime Springs.

What can be done to fill one or more of them with something productive?

Would it help to have a brainstorming session, either in person or online?

Do you know anyone looking for space for an office, a small manufacturing plant, a store, a gallery, or a restaurant? If so, put in a good word for Lime Springs and have them visit the town and get in touch with anyone in City Hall!

Brown Park

Brown Park looked really spiffed up for Sweet Corn Days! That’s a very nice park of which the town’s citizens can be very proud.

THANK YOU to all who work so hard to keep it attractive, updated, and safe!

New Ear

There’s a new ear in Lime Springs! A huge new ear of corn, that is!

The old one was very realistic looking. The “kernels” were one-gallon milk jugs with the bottom toward the outside. From a few feet away, the looked just like kernels of corn!

The new ear is made of multiple layers of foam insulation. The kernels are carved into the foam.

The “cob” in both the old and new ears is a series of 55-gallon barrels.

The old ear required lots of maintenance, more each year as it aged. Worse yet, the maintenance was hard to perform. It’s expected the maintenance of the new one will be much easier.

Thanks to all who pitched in to make this happen!!
