Who Had This John Deere?

Photo of small, old, John Deere.

Well, not that exact same John Deere, but one of the same model, a Model L.

I seem to recall that a local (Lime Springs area) farmer "moved up" from farming with horses to mechanized farming. He bought a tractor like the one shown here.

The question is, Who was that farmer?

I suspect it was in the mid to late 40s that this shift in this farmer's operation came. I seem to recall that it was "a big deal" when he made the change. Dad stopped so we could check out his tractor one time, when he was working a field near the road.

The State had some John Deere tractors like this, too ---if I remember correctly. Of course theirs were painted orange. They had mowers mounted on them and were used to mow the ditches.

Very few farmers had them; I only know of this one. That should make it easy for you!

If you know who the farmer was who had one of these, please right it in a comment. Right a bit about it or the farmer, please.

Or, if that's too much work, just call me!?

This little gem sported two cylinders. In the video below, it almost sounds like the traditional two-cylinder "Johnny popper." But it isn't. The cylinders in the Model L are vertical, not horizontal as in the traditional, "real," John Deeres. You can read some of the specs here: http://www.tractordata.com/farm-tractors/000/0/2/28-john-deere-l.html

Hint: The farmer I have in mind is not one of the Stevensons!
