Gertrude “Gertie” Hughes, 84, passed away May 31. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 11, at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church.
The picture above shows the happy couple, Eddie and Gertie Hughes, as they arrived for breakfast at Sweet Corn Days in August, 2014.
Gertie has lived in the house next to the location of my old church, the Presbyterian Church, almost as long as I can remember. She was an active member of the Lime Springs community and the United Methodist Church as long as her health permitted.
One of Eddie and Gertie’s six sons, Rob, was principle for several years at the Lime Springs/Chester elementary school. Essentially, he went to work in his back yard!
Gertie served as a driver for my mother, and probably others in town, on several occasions after she was no longer able to drive herself.
