Corey Smith, 56, of Williston, North Dakota, passed away April 29. Corey developed cancer, which ultimately claimed his life, about 2 1/2 years ago.

Corey was the son of Jim and Sheryll Smith and grew up in Lime Springs. He lived in Lime Springs until moving to Williston about eight years ago.

The Smith family has a good start on becoming a dynasty of carpenters, like the Munkels only smaller in numbers. Jim and Sheryll owned the local lumber yard for years, and Jim was a carpenter and cabinet maker. Son Mitch is a carpenter, as was Corey.

How he came to be in the oil fieled area of North Dakota is interesting! About eight years ago, a dentist from Williston was building a huge home. He purchased wood in Lime Springs from Harzell Woodstock. While here, he asked Jim Hartzell if he knew a good carpenter. Hartzell replied, “Yes, Corey Smith! I don’t know what he’s doing now, but he lives right behind the lumberyard. Go talk to him!” Corey did finishing work on that house for four years!

Then he got a job in the oil business. He worked for a person who refurbished the inside of the oil tanks which set near oil wells. That, too, turned out to be a wonderful relationship with the business owner considering Corey one of his few very special friends.

In addition to his parents, Corey is survived by a son and two daughters, two brothers, and two sisters.

Corey didn’t want a “funeral service.” However, friends in the Williston area will gather Saturday, May 7, to celebrate his life and remember their friend from Iowa.

Locally, a gathering in memory of Corey will be held at the Lime Springs Fish and Game Club clubhouse near Lime Springs on May 28, from 1 to 4. All are welcome to come and share memories of Corey with his family.
