Today’s Visit to Lime Springs

Kenny Jones’ Memorial Service

The reason for today’s visit was to attend the memorial service for Kenneth T. Jones. It was the first memorial service I’ve attended in the Community Center and it worked out very nicely. The “congregation” was seated in the west half of the building while tables for the lunch filled the east half.

The chairs were filled as many came to pay tribute to a great friend, neighbor, and citizen. The service was appropriate and touching. Doc Lyon sang a couple of songs and enticed the audience to join in on the chorus.

The theme of the service was inevitable change; butterflies illustrated the point. (A caterpillar dies befor a butterfly is created.) Colorful paper butterflies decorated the area. The message was fitting, as Kenny liked butterflies! Last evening, Kenny’s family visited the cemetery and released a dozen or so butterflies at his gravesite. Daughter Korrine said that she wanted Kenny’s great-grandkids to have a meaningful and pleasant memory of their great-grandparents.

The picture above shows about a third of the attendees forming a circle all around the Community Center, holding hands, and singing “Blest Be The Tie That Binds” as the service finished.

Butch and Dorene Burnikel catered the delicious lunch. It was good to see them in their natural habitat—a kitchen!

Jim & Sheryll’s Lawn Care

Sheryll’s Lawn Mower

A drive around town uncovered Jim Smith mowing the lawn at his late son’s home, so we stopped to say, “Hi!” Sheryll was working inside to prepare the home for sale.

Jim invited us in to see the neat handiwork that Corey, he, and Sheryll had put into the small house to make it very attractive.

Jim has always kept the large lawn at their home well groomed. This year, he’s responsible for mowing the lawn at Spring Apartments, too. He needs good equipment for all that mowing so bought this Kubota zero-turning-radius mower. He jokes that it is Sheryll’s mower! However, she says that she has yet to master the steering of it. It’s different, to be sure!

Sheryll is the only one from our LSHS class of 12 to live in Lime Springs. It’s good to visit them when we get to the old home town!

Today’s Visit to the Library

I stopped at the library to donate a stack of Sport Aviation magazines. They are far to good to simply throw into the recycle bin!

Janet said she’ll put the recent issues up for circulation and offer the older ones for sale. She accepted them without concern that the images of airplanes in them might change young readers lives forever.

As usual, today’s visit to my hometown was enjoyable, mainly because we got to see and visit with several friends from the past. It is not enjoyable to see empty buildings in one’s hometown.
