Last week I was surprised and very pleased to get a lengthy email from Lester Parry.

And a day or so ago, another great email from Burton Nagel.

Each of these warrants an article, in due course.

And I will write them, as yesterday in Lime Springs two people came up to me and told me they enjoyed The Lime Springs Page. That should keep me going for at least another two months!

I do appreciate all comments, especially those which can be turned into articles or comments to existing articles. I'll be more than happy to share the writing workload with you!

Sweet Corn Day 2010

Perfect weather encouraged a large crowd for Sunday's Sweet Corn Day and its famous parade.

They came from far and wide, including Owatonna! (Our granddaughter and her family, but they count, too!) All four of Maurice Williams' family were there. They hailed from Florida, Texas, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

Here's one who didn't come far: Wilton Thomas.

Photo of Wilton Thomas.I have a few more pictures, but they will have to wait. A big truck and three husky men, plus two good friends, will show up at our doorstep tomorrow morning at 8AM and whisk our belongings to our new digs.

This whole buying, selling, moving process is probably worth a few articles, too.

But certainly not tonight!

Moving

Our concentration the last few weeks has been on moving. Tuesday, the 17th, is the big day.

I tell people that we're "moving South!" then quickly add, "About four miles south." We're now just outside the city, as just across our back fence is the city of Cedar Rapids. The new place is inside the city limits. I guess that means I'll have the right to express my opinions regarding city affairs after the move.

The really good news is that our current home has a sale pending. That means that we are working hard to divide everything into one of three categories: move, throw, sell.

We're having a tag sale Sep. 9, 10, 11. As far as I can tell, a "tag sale" is the same as an estate sale except we are still living.

There'll be lots of things on this sale. Need a pair of skis? Come. Need four pair—come! Need plastic parts drawers, a love seat, pop-over pans, or a mole trap? This is the sale for you!

Sweet Corn Day

This is the big weekend of the year in Lime Springs!

The Annual Sweet Corn Day festivities begin Friday evening and continue through Sunday. There are plenty of activities, but the big draw is the parade on Sunday. It's the biggest one of the summer for miles around.

I'm sure Cherry Grove has as it's goal that their Fourth of July parade to be larger than ours, but so far their goal has not been met.

Pat and I plan to enjoy the friendship of friends as we eat omelettes Sunday morning.

"You Saved Me!"

Photo of Wayne Roberts at EAA AirVenture Oshkosh 2010Yesterday (July 27) Wayne and I joined up for a speedy tour of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh. There were probably about 50,000 other aviation lovers there, too.

We were standing in a line waiting for a tram to take us to another location. (At our age and condition, trams are good and walking is bad.) Wayne glanced down at the name tag of a fellow waitee, reached out his hand and said, "Bill, didn't you fly gliders in Phoenix? I'm Wayne Roberts."

The fellow looked up, reached out his hand, and said, "You saved me!"

They related the story: Bill had been on an "out and back" glider flight. On the way back to Phoenix, he noticed that a valley through which he needed to fly, or possibly even land, was covered with clouds or fog. Fortunately he was able to find a place where the rising air currents allowed him to stay at a safe altitude for a long time.

He called on his radio and Wayne answered, from his car. Wayne suggested that he just loiter for a while and it would clear.

He loitered for an hour and a half, the problem disappeared, and he landed safely back at his home base.

But he remembered Wayne Roberts after 15 or 20 years!

This could also have been titled "It's a Small World." This sort of chance meeting is not unusual at Oshkosh.
