Warren Improves; Update #4

The improvements aren't huge, but after all he's been through any slight improvement is very welcome. The best "improvement" is that he's not gotten any worse and is not having the problems with his heart which were considered setbacks.

He is moving a bit more but does not yet respond to commands. Sharla says that is not of huge concern to the doctors but is of concern to her, of course, because he has been sedated for a month now. We'll all feel very relieved when he wakes up and can talk to us!

They've also been able to remove a lot more fluid from his body, which is good.

Sharla has been back home in Brainerd for a few days and will return to Rochester today (Tuesday, 15th). Jessica and her two little girls went to Brainerd several days ago. She plans to remain in MN until early in October. She'll stay in Brainerd, then drive to Rochester to visit Warren and Sharla from time to time.

Norman Borlaug Died

The Cedar Rapids Gazette's front page is nearly filled with articles about Norman Borlaug this morning.

He died yesterday of cancer in Dallas at age 95. He is credited with saving more lives than any person in history through his work with crops. He was able to develope strains of grain which increased yeild many fold and showed farmers in developing countries how to grow them.

According to the news last night, he is only one of five persons to recieve a special assortment of awards, including the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional Gold Medal. Other recipients were Mother Teressa, Nelson Mandella, Martin Luther King Jr., and one I've forgotten.

Pretty heady company for a farm boy born in Cresco, I'd say.

Iowa Wins!

Iowa 35

Iowa State 3

But it really wasn't fair. Iowa State had to beat Iowa and itself to win. Penalties and interceptions pretty much killed the game for Iowa State. Without those, it might have been a pretty good game.

There's always next year, right?

Warren Update #3

Written by Keith Thursday, 10 September 2009 19:19

This is a fairly positive report, for which I am very thankful.

We had dinner with Sharla last evening (Sep. 9). She reported that Warren's heart had been relatively stable for the last day and a half. They have taken him off some high-powered antibotics used to ward off infection and also some other medicines which will allow his body to slowly return to a more normal condition.

Their goal now is to begin the "wake-up" process, which will take several days. Warren has now been sedated into unconsciousness for a month!

Sharla is so waiting for him to become awake—and I certainly don't blame her. Even though one or more of their dauighters have been with them for a good share of the time, hospital duty is tough duty. Sharla has weathered it through the little ups and the horrible downs like a real trooper. My hat is off to her.

Please understand that when I give these reports, the words are mine and are what I understood was meant by what Sharla told me. They may not be technically correct interpretations but I will try very, very, hard not to say anything which is incorrect.
